Outdated Pregnancy Exercise Guidelines Put Moms and Their Babies at Risk

Every session I have with a pregnant woman is amazing. It may be the only time in her life she will experience pregnancy and childbirth. It is the only time in her life she will have 100% control over her child’s health, from exercise, nutrition, thoughts, stress, emotions, environmental toxins… but not every pregnant mom has the support or correct information she needs to maintain the healthiest pregnancy for both her and her baby.

If you have exercised during your pregnancy or know someone who has, you may know the feelings I had during both of my pregnancies. I felt amazing, fit, sexy, and confident in my body. I never had morning sickness, aches and pains, or felt uncomfortable…I never had that physical feeling of wanting the baby out, just the emotional excitement to meet him and then her!

Both of my births were 100% natural and I pushed Kaden out in 12 minutes and Naiya slid out. Yes literally, I had to blow her out so she would not come too fast and cause a tear.

Like I mentioned above, not all pregnant women know the TRUTH about PREGNANCY and EXERCISE. Unless pregnant moms are informed by educated Pre and Postnatal Exercise Specialists, they may continue to live in fear about exercising while pregnant. Just today I received this email…literally, this is a screen shot from my gmail inbox…

Since we have Fit For Birth Certified Pilates Instructors here in Miami, I am trying to connect them, so she can at least pick up her Pilates!

BUT…

This is obviously a healthy mom who was very active pre-pregnancy. She is being persuaded by her doctor to not be healthy and she may think exercise will hurt her baby since her doctor is strongly advising against the exercise.

In the meantime she feels flabby, bored, and even uses the words it is “painful to see”. How is a mom going to enjoy her pregnancy, feel sexy, look good and maintain her health?

How is she going to feel going into labor and delivery? Strong and ready to birth her baby, or powerless and afraid her body may fail?

My guess is she will continue to feel bored and flabby and there is nothing she can do about it. She will be counting the days till her baby is born so she can get on with life and get her body back. That is unless she decides to work with me or another Fit For Birth Certified Exercise Specialist.

The pregnant mom and her baby are literally suffering because the doctor has not yet received the Memo that the ACOG changed their guidelines more than a decade ago regarding pregnant moms and raising their heart rates above 140bpm. Actually, there is no current guideline anywhere that states a pregnant mom should keep her heart rate below 140bpm.

Actually, In Exercising Through Your Pregnancy, Dr. James F. Clapp, professor emeritus of reproductive biology at Case Western Reserve University and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, dissolves virtually all myths that exercise is anything but beneficial for pregnant mom and fetus.

Dr. Clapp is considered the worlds leading authority on exercise during pregnancy and encourages pregnant women to exercise moderate to intense throughout their entire pregnancy in order to maintain the mental, emotional and physical benefits of exercise for both mom and baby.

But can I blame the doctor solely? No. It is not their job to know the ins and outs of exercise during pregnancy…their job is to perform surgery and work with high-risk moms who may need the attention of a doctor and special tools the hospital offers.

Can I blame society? Yes partly…we have allowed the fear of pregnancy and childbirth govern our decisions or in this case the doctors suggestions.

Can I blame the pregnant mom? Yes partly…is she in tune with her body and her baby? Is she ready to challenge her doctor or at least take his recommendation as a recommendation and get a second opinion? What is the doctor’s reason for this outdated pregnancy exercise “rule”?

But instead of blaming the culprit, let me offer a solution. The Pre and Post Natal Exercise Specialist.

So what can you do as a Pre and Postnatal Exercise Specialist? You will be informed on how to work with a mom who comes to you with these “doctor’s orders” and help them find their gut feeling, hold their hand to feel their intuition.

She may or may not feel comfortable raising her heart rate above 140 but she will have a much happier, healthier, and sexier pregnancy knowing she is in good hands and feeling worked out…even if you don’t challenge her heart rate.

Babies born to mothers who exercise during their pregnancy experience:

  • Increased physical health scores as measured immediately upon birth and up to five years later

  • Fewer fetal interventions
  • Fewer pregnancy complications

Moms who exercise during their pregnancy experience:

  • Less weight gain
  • Less labor pain
  • Less pregnancy discomfort

Creating A Deeper Bond With Your Unborn Child Through Exercise

A pregnant mom’s thoughts and feelings affect her unborn child. “Through the study of perinatal and prenatal psychology we know that the embryo begins learning and accumulating memory from the very beginning of its life in utero. Therefore our personal choices and actions when pregnant have significant impact upon the forming of the baby, his future, his coping mechanisms, his ability to grow and learn, and his relationship with all that surrounds him.” Guidetta Torneta, Painless Childbirth.

Every pregnant mom wants a happy and healthy baby. They may quit smoking or drinking alcohol, and they might choose healthier foods or start an exercise program to create a healthier lifestyle. It is now scientifically proven that there is another component that affects a baby’s health: her mother’s thoughts and feelings during pregnancy. Dr. Verny author of Nurturing the Unborn Child says, “No one doubts that the mother’s diet is important to the developing baby…” but “sensation, feeling, and thought—immerse the unborn child in a primordial world of experience, continuously directing the development of the mind. If you do your best to remain calm during your pregnancy and communicate a sense of love to your unborn baby, you will be contributing immensely to the emotional and physical health of your child for the rest of his life”. Pregnancy is a special time that a woman can rebirth herself to become the woman and mom she desires to be, as well as shape the way her baby experiences and responds to the world.

As a Pre and Post Natal Health Coach, it is inspiring to see the life changes a pregnant mom makes to nurture her unborn child. One of the fastest growing trends that I have recently seen is the recognition of how important it is for pregnant women to connect and consciously share love with their unborn babies. This can be done in many ways such as: dreaming, talking to the baby, massaging the baby, meditating, writing to the baby, singing to the baby, dancing with the baby, thinking of the baby, visualizing… For some pregnant moms this is already a natural part of daily life. For others it may feel uncomfortable, foreign, or they simply may not know the depth of relationship they can develop with their unborn children.

One way to incorporate physical fitness and create a deep bond with your unborn baby is by using a style of exercise called Labor Training™. Labor Training™ was originally developed to train the pregnant mom and baby for the rigors of childbirth, mentally, emotionally, and physically. It is an exercise sequence that mimics the timing, intensity, energy and rest periods of labor contractions. As I continued to coach pregnant moms and myself through Labor Training™ I recognized that with a little bit of tweaking, this style of exercise could be done any time throughout the day as an activity to consciously connect and bond to the unborn child.

Labor Training™ with the purpose of connecting and sending love to your unborn baby is simple! Reserve 5 to 10 minutes of your day to be outside, preferably in nature. Perform an exercise you enjoy, one that will get the muscles working and blood pumping. For Example:
Take a 1 to 2 minute swim in a natural body of water. Really pump those legs, move those arms, get your heart rate up. Now hold onto a floating device, rest your head, let your body relax in the water and take a few deep breaths. Take the next minute or two to consciously calm your heart rate. Place your hand on your belly and tell your baby you love him. You may share your words verbally or through your thoughts. Repeat this exercise one or two more times. If the water is too cold, try to find a heated saltwater pool to perform the exercise.

Or

If you’re out for a walk, speed up enough to challenge your breathing (perhaps walking up stairs). Then find a bench, or lie in the grass, and take a moment to rest and connect.

This style of training is extremely effective for connecting to your unborn baby.

  1. Exercise produces endorphins that trigger a positive feeling in the body.
  2. Physical Exercise is a known de-stressor, and can reduce tension. It tires the muscles thus allowing them to relax. Relaxed muscles contribute to a relaxed mind, allowing for the space to truly connect.
  3. Nature makes us feel awake and alive.
  4. Thoughts that infuse the developing baby with a sense of happiness or calm can set the stage for a balanced and happy life.

Enjoy the connection you have made and know your baby has felt your love.

What is the transverse abdominis?

Transverse abdominusIt is a muscle layer of the anterior and lateral abdominal wall . It is
thought to be a significant component of the core.  Basically the
TVA is a key muscle for stabilizing the thoracic spine.  It should
fire (contract) with every movement you make, voluntary or
involuntary.

Why is working the transverse abdominis important?

It affects the likelihood of injury during  exercise.  It affects
the likelihood of suffering diastasis recti and back pain.  It
affects the size of your belly, your sense of comfort or discomfort
throughout pregnancy, and your self-consciousness about how “big”
you are  getting.

How to check if your TVA is functioning:

Put your fingers a few inches below your belly button and cough.
Does your belly go out (distend) or draw in?  If it distends your
TVA is not functioning optimally.

Whether your TVA is functioning optimally or not, it is a muscle

Today’s focus is on hip loading.  Why is hip loading important?

Basically when there are muscle imbalances, some muscles will be
over active and some muscles will be under active.  These
imbalances will almost always show up as altered movement
patterns.  This altered movement pattern leads to increased stress
on the tissues and potentially injury will occur.

You squat everyday, whether or not you realize it.

Squatting is seen daily, both directly and indirectly: getting up
and down from chairs, sitting on the toilet, picking up new baby,
get in and out of the car, breaking down the stroller, pick up
stroller to put into car…you may also use the squat position in
labor and delivery.

The implications of this hip-knee loading imbalance include back
pains, ankle strains and sprains, neck aches, and generalized
degradation of the entire musculo-skeletal system.

How do you know if you are squatting correctly?

Here is a simple way to assess yourself.

  •   Hip Loading versus Knee Loading (do you naturally drop back into your hips, or forward into your knees?)
  •  Are you breathing?  Belly Pumping (breathing, expansion and contraction of the midsection, or  otherwise use of the core during the movement, especially at the bottom transition).

Diaphragmatic Breathing for Pregnancy and Childbirth

Today’s focus is on diaphragmatic breathing.

What is a diaphragmatic breath?

A diaphragmatic breath means you use your primary breathing muscle
to draw air deep into your lower lungs.  This appears to fill the
tummy, sides, low back, and lower ribs with air, followed by
filling the chest only after.  The more you see or feel the torso,
rather than the chest move the stronger your diaphragm is.  Most
women (and men)will fill their chest first and have very little
movement come from their ribs, tummy, and back.

Why is diaphragmatic breathing important?

Proper function of the primary breathing muscle, the diaphragm, is
absolutely critical for appropriate core function.  The diaphragm
is the most important muscle in the body for multiple reasons, not
least of which is that its weakness is often the key underlying
muscle imbalance that causes all other muscle imbalances.

IMAGINE being warmly woken by the singing birds.  You open your eyes to the deep blue ocean illuminated by the rising sun.
Looking around, the land is mountainous and lush with colorful budding flowers and fruiting trees. In the distance you see fins of dolphins surfacing.  You wonder what it will be like to experience them in their underworld.
You have heard dolphins are attracted to pregnant women and they are known to be healers and you question its truth. The 1/2 mile ride down to the bay is quick, now you have a closer view of the wild spinner dolphins.  They are so graceful.  Then you see them jump and spin as if they are putting on this breath taking show for you.  You put on your mask and snorkel to enter the fresh clear water.  The underworld is full of colorful fish, coral and plants.  It feels amazingly peaceful.  As you turn you see your first glimpse of a pod of dolphins less than 20 feet away.  Words can’t explain this moment nor the following 40 minutes but FEELINGS OF PEACE, calm, and playful fill your body. A quick ride back to the Whale Song Sanctuary and you didn’t even realize the hunger until you see the gourmet breakfast.  A quick rinse, comfortable clothes and a relaxed meal on the lanai over looking the underworld you just experienced.
